Word Problems
Example: The sum of the reciprocals of two consecutive odd integers is 4/3. Set up an algebraic equation and use it to find the two integers.
Example: Norm can paint the office by himself in 5 hours.  Cliff could do the same job in 7 hours. If they work together, how long will it take them to paint the office?
Example: An executive went on an 8-hour business trip that required a 165-mile bus ride to the airport then another 2,750 miles by airplane.  If the airplane speed was 10 times that of the bus, what is was the average speed of the airplane?

Chapter 6 Sample Test Questions

Example: Given the function:
   a. Calculate f(0).
   b. Find all values of x for which f(x) = 0.
Example: Find a quadratic equation with integer coefficients and the following solution set.
Example: The product of two consecutive odd positive integers is eleven less than 10 times the larger. Find the integers.
Example: The length of a rectangle is 6 centimeters longer than twice its width. If the area is 140 square centimeters, find the dimensions of the rectangle.
Example: The cost of a particular car in dollars can be approximated by the function:
Here x represents the age of the car in years.

   a. Use the graph to determine the cost of the car when it was new?
   b. How old will the car be when it reaches its minimum cost?
   c. How much is this car worth when it reaches 5 years old?

Chapter 3 Sample Test Questions

Sample chapter test to accompany the online Elementary Algebra textbook published by Flat World Knowledge.

Word Problems
Example: Given the linear equation 3x - 5y = 30:  Express it in slope-intercept form and graph it and label the x- and y-intercepts on the graph.
Example: Find the x- and y-intercepts and use them to graph 2x + 3y = 6.

Example: Graph the linear function f(x) = -2/3 x + 8 and calculate f(6).

Example: Are the two lines parallel, perpendicular, or neither?
Determine and compare the slopes of each line in the given system.

Example: Graph the following two lines on the same set of axes and indicate where they intersect.

Example: Find the equation of the line that is passing through (8, -2) and parallel to the line passing through (-3, -2) and (5, 1).

Example: Find the equation of the line that is passing through (2, -1) and perpendicular to y = 3/5 x + 2.

Example: Find the equation of the line passing through (3, 5) and (3, -4).  Graph the line and label any intercepts.
